It is a requirement that all MRC teams have a qualified First Aid Officer present at every game. A medical background is not a requirement, the Club will organise training for anyone who is not qualified. You just need to be calm under pressure, be a good communicator and be able to move quickly up and down the field. Your role is to watch for injuries during the game, assess the situation to determine if further medical assistance is required and provide basic first aid.
To act as First Aid officer, you must have:
To ensure that there is a first aid officer available at each game, we need two first aid attendants identified for each team before the beginning of the season. The Rugby Club will fully fund training for volunteers. Each team is supplied with a stocked First Aid kit and Vest.
If you are interested in being a First Aid Attendant, please contact firstaid@maristrugby.com

Restocking Procedure:
The First Aid Coordinator will be available at Home Games to restock Marist First Aid Kits. If the kit requires restocking between Home Games, please email firstaid@maristrugby.com
First-Aid Facilities
There will be a first aid station at all Marist home games (including at Curtin oval), staffed by registered physiotherapists. The First Aid tent is manned throughout the day for ice, strapping (if there is a medical reason for it), bandaging, and basic injury management. The physiotherapist is on duty will assess the need for any additional treatment, including making recommendations for imaging or follow-up treatment.
For serious injuries, including suspected spinal injuries, an ambulance should be called immediately.
Reporting of Injuries
Recording of injuries and “near misses” is central to Marist College Canberra’s obligation to take such measures as are reasonable in all the circumstances to protect students, staff, and the wider College community from risks of harm that reasonably ought to be foreseen.
Reporting injuries and near misses that occur as part of the College’s sporting club activities is essential so we can collectively respond to and analyse the incidents, mitigate risks and put corrective actions in place where required.
All Sports Club’s coaches, managers and volunteers must use the MCC Sport Clubs Safety Incident Form to log incidents as soon as possible after they occur. Timely reporting is important because notifications based on the type of incident are automatically triggered to College Executives and key staff who can then initiate appropriate responses and/or pastoral care arrangements. The link online form can be accessed via a QR code found inside all first aid kits. It is recommended that coaches and managers bookmark the link on their devices for ease of access throughout the season
IMPORTANT NOTE: This online Incident Form is for the access and use of club coaches, managers and/or first aid officers only NOT for parents/guardians.

This link also provides access to the Referral and Return From. If your son has been issued with a Blue Card, this form MUST be completed and returned to firstaid@maristrugby.com before he is able to return to play.
Treatment of Concussion
If you are notified that your son has received a suspected concussion, they should see a medical doctor or emergency department as soon as practical (within 72 hours of the injury). A minimum of two sleeps (following the incident) must be observed before any player can be assessed to exclude concussion, hence NO player can be cleared in a time frame less than this. The referral must happen even if symptoms or signs have disappeared. Ideally, the medical doctor who reviews the player should have experience in the assessment and management of sports concussion.
Physical rest should be for a minimum of (19) nineteen days for any child or adolescent (18 years and under) with concussion or suspected concussion. This physical rest comprises a minimum of 24 hours of complete physical and cognitive rest followed by relative rest (activity that does not induce or aggravate symptoms) for the rest of the 19 days. Cautious reintroduction of cognitive (“thinking”) activities are allowed following an obligatory 24 hours of complete (physical and cognitive) rest as long as symptoms related to the concussion are not aggravated.
After the 19 day physical rest period the player:
A physiotherapist with further training in concussion management should be consulted for a return to play program.
