Henry Hutchison burst onto the rugby scene in late 2015, earning a spot with the Australian team for the Rio 2016 Oceania qualifiers. His standout debut World Series season saw him score 27 tries, win Rookie of the Year, and secure a place in the Rio squad. Despite a tough start in Rio, including a 31-14 loss to France, the team advanced to the quarter-finals but ultimately finished eighth, with Hutchison scoring his only try against France.
Post-Rio, Hutchison briefly played for the Melbourne Rebels before returning to Sevens in 2018, marking his return with a strong performance at the Rugby World Cup Sevens in San Francisco. In 2021, he was named vice-captain and led the team through the Oceania Sevens and a series against New Zealand.
Hutchison competed at Tokyo 2020, where Australia reached the knockout stages but finished seventh. His 2021-22 season was notable for reaching his 100th try and debuting at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, where Australia placed fourth.
In 2023, Hutchison faced setbacks with an ACL tear and other injuries but made a successful return at the Perth Sevens in early 2024, helping Australia secure second place. Coach John Manenti praised Hutchison’s resilience and leadership.
Hutchison has also completed a Bachelor of Commerce in Finance at the University of NSW. At the Paris 2024 Olympics, he played a key role in Australia’s best-ever finish in men’s rugby sevens, with the team finishing fourth after strong performances in the pool stage but falling to Fiji and South Africa in the knockout rounds.
